Commentary

This ad is about a name change, but its visual grammar insists that the change is bigger than lettering. The old Interbank and Master Charge cards sit beneath the new MasterCard card, making the transition look like a physical handoff from one world to another. The copy calls it “subtle” and immediately says it will mean “a world of new possibilities.”

The promise is infrastructure disguised as lifestyle. More than 140 countries and more than three million locations turn a bank card into a map of access. “The Good Life” is deliberately vague because the service wants to attach itself to whatever the customer intends to buy, not to one category of product.

The practical instructions matter: keep using the old card until the new one arrives. That sentence prevents a brand transition from becoming a customer inconvenience. For young copywriters, the lesson is to pair aspiration with friction-reducing detail. A large promise becomes credible when the small changeover is explained.

Mastercard’s own brand history traces its growth from a card association into a global payments and technology company; its current network description focuses on secure payment processing and account-to-account payments in the official brand history.

The durable promise is wider, easier participation in everyday commerce. The card, country count and “new services” belong to a pre-digital payments world; the brand’s basic job—make transactions possible across distance—has only become more infrastructural.

Master Charge is becoming MasterCard. To give you more of the good life. A subtle name change. But it will mean a world of new possibilities for you. And The Good Life. Because MasterCard is not just a charge card. It's becoming a system for universal transactions. For banking needs and services. For more of the new services that you'll want (and need) in the 80's ... in more than 140 countries ... at more than 3 million locations. When you receive your new MasterCard bank card, it will replace your current Master Charge card. Until your new card arrives, continue using your current card. We circle the world. THE GOOD LIFE INTERBANK
