READING BETWEEN THE LINES

Commentary

I first meet the car from above. The roof panels are out, and the high angle makes the open cockpit the center of the picture; a second photograph at the foot of the page looks into tan leather seats. The enormous word “AWESOME” cuts across the space between them. The ad sells an alteration to the familiar Z-car before it asks me to inspect an engine: the occupant can now see the sky.

The copy makes that small architectural change feel like release. “Turn it on and turn it loose” leads into “open cockpit to the heavens,” then “shifting winds.” Yet the pitch does not leave pleasure unsupported. Fuel injection, independent suspension, four power discs, five speeds and the instruments fill the two columns. Cruise control and optional leather soften the performance story. Even the mileage box at the lower left insists this sports car can be examined with a commuter’s arithmetic, though its fine-print estimates require care. The offer to purchase or lease sends the reader to a dealer, where the large type’s excitement could be tested against the car itself.

For a new copywriter, the verbs are the useful clue. “Moves,” “flies,” “glides,” “responds,” “cradles” and “surrounds” make a feature list feel like a sequence of bodily sensations. The all-caps “AWESOME” supplies a single emotional destination; the smaller specifications give readers reasons to believe they might reach it. This works because the photographs show both the exterior gesture and the interior reward. The headline alone would be a boast.

Nissan’s heritage collection identifies the overseas 280Z as the Datsun 280ZX, and its 1980s history records the later move toward a unified Nissan name abroad. Nissan still builds cars and crossovers under its own name; the Datsun signature here belongs to an earlier stage of that brand transition.

Open-air motoring and the need to make performance tangible still have force. The paper mileage box, the dealer-only call to action and the promise that a roof opening is the “ultimate definition” of anything belong more particularly to this ad’s moment. What remains is the deft way a visible physical change becomes a larger promise of freedom.
