Apple

Go through life with less baggage.

READING BETWEEN THE LINES

Commentary

Apple turns a promise about information management into a picture of physical relief. Across a nearly empty white spread, a laptop, a bulging card file, an organiser, a fax machine and smaller office tools recede toward a man walking away with a handheld device. The objects supply the weight; the surrounding space supplies the feeling of being released from it. “Go through life with less baggage” makes the product benefit legible before naming the MessagePad 130.

The route through the image also creates a useful delay. The main headline sits alone on the left, while the product, explanation and response details gather on the lower right. Readers first encounter a recognisable problem, then discover the proposed replacement. The open space is not an absence of information: it gives an unusually busy list of capabilities a simple organising idea.

The body copy repeats that sequence at a smaller scale. Names, dates, meeting notes and e-mail establish the burden. Scheduling, handwriting recognition, faxing and Internet access become ways of lightening it. “Learn less, do more” addresses another possible burden: the effort of mastering the device itself. The assertion that Newton works the way the user does turns a technical operating-system upgrade into a claim about accommodation.

Specific details keep the promise from floating entirely free of the hardware. The backlit screen answers use in darkness, named applications suggest practical work, and the connection graphic supports transfer to a PC. The photographed screen and stylus make the interaction tangible. Meanwhile, the faxback kit, telephone extension and printed Web addresses give several routes into a purchase. The page imagines a mobile professional, but still explains mobile computing through familiar office objects and dealer contact.

Apple was founded in 1976 and now supplies devices including Mac, iPhone and iPad alongside software and services, as outlined in its 50th-anniversary account. Newton belongs to an earlier branch of that history: Apple announced the end of further Newton OS and product development in February 1998.

The wish to carry fewer tools while keeping information available remains recognisable in today’s mobile devices. The ad’s particular route to that freedom—fax software, a separate PC connection and a faxback information kit—locates it in a different working environment. Read now, the white space also raises a useful question for designers: consolidating physical objects may reduce what someone carries without necessarily reducing how much demands their attention.
