Commentary

I first read the boast at the top: “Be a Web design superhero.” Then comes a wonderfully inconvenient qualification about underwear and pants. Macromedia offers a fantasy of extraordinary work while refusing the costume that would make the fantasy embarrassing. Below it, a BMW Z8 website fills almost the entire spread. The designer’s supposed powers are demonstrated through someone else’s product: a car rendered as a navigable, image-rich experience rather than a static brochure.

The body copy moves between scale and process. “Basic animation, menus and navigation systems” names recognizable jobs; “the most amazing feats of Web design ever attempted” stretches them into spectacle. ActionScript, FreeHand, and Generator then make the promise sound like a workflow rather than a single trick. The BMW browser windows supply a concrete example, including “Performance” and “360° Exterior” labels, but the printed scan cannot show how quickly or reliably that site worked. The ad sells the ability to make such an experience, not evidence of its performance.

Its period detail is the browser frame itself. The address bar is visible, as if a web address were still a useful proof that this kind of presentation could happen online. Today interactive product pages are familiar; in this ad, the wide interface and tiny navigation marks are part of the wonder. That shift is an inference from the visual emphasis, not a claim about every site in 2000.

For a new copywriter, the headline is a lesson in balancing aspiration with self-awareness. “Superhero” grants the audience status, then “underwear on the outside of your pants” makes the compliment safe to accept. The closing instruction, “Design like a superhero, but never, ever, dress like one,” returns to the joke after the feature list. Repetition gives a technical software pitch a memorable shape without replacing the specifics that make it credible.

Adobe completed its acquisition of Macromedia in 2005. Flash Professional later became Adobe Animate, which Adobe currently supports in maintenance mode.

The ambition to let designers build rich, interactive experiences remains. The dependence on Flash playback does not: Adobe ended Flash Player support in 2020, and the browser-centered demonstration now reads as a record of a particular web platform.
